our 2nd port of call was also in mexico; it was costa maya. costa maya was hit by hurricane dean about 5 years ago and is still rebuilding. they rebuilt the beach and restaurant area we visited during our stay from scratch! you could still see old docks that had been destroyed and an area where they once had dolphins. while there was still destruction around it didn't distract from our visit!

this is at port with costa maya in the background.
the landscape is pretty flat. |
 |
the coastline. you can see in the distance part of the Meso-American Barrier Reef, which is the second largest barrier reef in the world! |
 |
a nice biking/walking path along the coast.
we didn't have time to ride bikes along here, but i REALLY wanted too.
maybe next time? |
 |
| a lighthouse |
we went on a guided excursion to the chacchoben mayan ruins at this port. our tour guide, diana, was FABULOUS!! the bus ride to the ruins was about an hour and she talked the entire time about the history of costa maya and the mayan people. it was very informative and interesting. i love history so i really enjoyed it. she also had a great sense of humor, which was fun too!

| this is at one of the mayan temples(don't we look angelic?) |

over looking the landscape from the top of the hill
|
after visiting the ruins, we went to the beach that was completely destroyed and rebuilt. it was gorgeous but the snorkeling not so much.
 |
you can see in the distance where they kept the dolphins.
when snorkeling, you could see old remains from the docks. |
 |
| picturesque...ned thinks it looks like a back drop! |
after going to the beach we headed back to the village to do some shopping and to practice more "GRINGO" spanish. lots of pushy salesman in mexico!! i did get comments on my blue eyes...i remember getting a lot of those in panama too...funny!!
