what is with people? it still amazes me how ridiculous our world is some times. i am completely disgusted by the fact that so many people find using the F-word so cool! i can't stand hearing that word! come on people! with all the words in the english language, or any language for that matter, why do you have to choose that one??? i have had too many experiences recently with hearing this word and i am completely disgusted and FED UP! it is also interesting to note, none of the people using the f-word have been adults. even more apalling!!!!
a few weeks ago i was in our local library looking for something, i can't even remember what! a book perhaps(lol)?! anyhow, there are some computers set up right next to the children's section for customers to search the web, check email, etc. there were 3 tweenage kids messing around on the internet. i didn't really pay attention to them as i was browsing in the children's section until i started hearing the f-word coming out of their obnoxious little mouths. they WERE NOT whispering either! i let it pass but i did look around to see if anyone else seemed bothered by their language or noticed. no one seemed to hear them. i continued on my way, but then a few minutes later i was over by them again preparing to check out my books(the computers are also situated close to the check-out line). as i stood in line, i could hear them spouting the f-word again. i looked around and noticed a mom with some kids and she seemed oblivious to the fact they were swearing and still it didn't seem to me anyone was noticing or caring, EXCEPT me!! finally, i couldn't take it any longer and i said,
"hey, would guys please stop using that vulgar language. it is rude and inappropriate. there are not only adults here, but children and i do not appreciate you swearing" (i said it in a normal but firm voice, so they would definitely hear me and get my drift)!
they just smirked at me and went back to their web surfing. boy, was i mad but i felt so much better!! i just couldn't stand there and listen to their language and not say anything. i just kept thinking these kids are about the same age as my own 2 oldest children.
the other day i was walking across the street to the church to teach scouts(yes, i am a cub scout leader) and about 5 kids(elementary school-age) passed me and i could hear them saying the f-word. i wanted to scream at them but i held my tongue and went on my way. but, it got me to thinking why do so many kids and adults use this vulgar word? is it because they are trying to be cool? do they just begin using it and over time it becomes a habit? do their parents use it(i think this is definitely a possibility, which btw, i heard a mom using the f-word one day around her 2 year-old) and it just becomes part of their vocabulary and they don't even realize they are saying it? is it so widely used that it just seems normal?
ned mentioned to me the other day(he works at fedex loading trucks at night) that everyone on his line swears. his boss is always yelling swear words at the workers. not the f-word but others. when i asked about the f-word, he said that all the workers pretty much use it as a noun, adjective, verb, whatever! he said, "you can definitely tell i work in a blue collar job!"
however, it isn't only in so-called blue collar type jobs he has experienced this either. last summer, while working in a firm, the attorney he was working for dropped the f-word on a regular basis. ned said that even while on the phone with clients he would use it. talk about choosing to make yourself sound like a complete LOSER! he couldn't believe that an educated person with all the words in the world to use, would choose to use the f-word!! talk about lame!!
i try to put myself in others shoes sometimes. i can see that tweens may be trying to experiment with their independence or trying to fit in! i can also tell that many adults are just as immature as tweens. maybe, it is an education thing. maybe, it is an example set by their parents. maybe, they have toureettes? how do i know? i just know that if you are going to use the f-word, it better NOT BE AROUND ME! i am completely fed up and i will tell you to SHUT YOUR MOUTH!!!
anyways, just a few thoughts from me at 4 in the morning. this apparently had me worked up since i couldn't sleep!!
DOES THIS WORD KEEP YOU UP AT NIGHTS, OR AM I JUST WEIRD???
please don't tell me i am weird!
good night, or should i say good morning!!??!!??

You are not weird Ash. It is discusting & all too common. I can't count the number of times it was the first word I heard in the mornings when I walked into the schools and the last word of the day as I left the schools I taught at. How sad.
I'd like to think it is a sign of the lack of education but I actually think it is just so common that many people don't even notice it anymore. Double sad.
I'm glad you tell people what you think though. People should know that it is inappropriate and if they don't someone needs to tell them. I've heard entire conversations between kids, and triple sad, between adults in which this word was used in just about every sentence. YUCK!
What's even more gross is when women say it, don't know why but it sounds even more revolting coming out of a "lady's" mouth!

I totally agree with you. I can't believe the kids these days are swearing younger and younger. I don't even allow stupid in our house. We say IGNORANT! ha ha At least if my kids are going to say something is [stupid] they can at least express themselves intelligently! (by using 'ignorant', i.e.)
I don't even know if that makes any sense at all!!
Love you anyways.
